These two are my reconstructions of a pair of human specimens, one a middle-aged man and the other a twenty-something woman, from the Mesolithic site of Oberkassel in Germany. They date to around 14,000 years ago, near the end of the last ice age, and their genetic data suggests a close relationship to later Mesolithic peoples of western Europe. The male specimen’s skull stands out for having very robust features, with wide square jaws and prominent cheekbones.
