This is an ancient Egyptian huntsman from the predynastic period, the period of Egyptian prehistory before the country’s unification circa 3100 BC. The feather in his hair and the lion’s tail attached to the back of his loincloth are referenced from depictions of hunters inscribed on a schist palette dating to this period. Although the Egyptians during this era would have already adopted agriculture and animal husbandry, hunting would nonetheless retain significance as a sport for the upper classes as well as representing the triumph of order over the chaotic forces of the wilderness in artwork.
