Mesolithic Moose Hunt

Oh deer, this moose hunt in Mesolithic Britain seems to have gone awry!

Although we may sooner associate moose with North America or the far north of Eurasia than the British Isles, their range would have in fact extended into Great Britain well into the early Holocene, which corresponds to the Mesolithic cultural period. It would have been sometime during the Bronze Age when these massive deer disappeared from Britain, although they maintain a presence in other areas of northern Europe to this day. Funnily enough, Europeans typically call their native moose populations “elk”, a term we use for a different species of deer also known as the wapiti.
